Het wijngebied Valpolicella is wereldwijd bekend om zijn uitstekende wijnen. En hoewel men hier een eeuwenoude wijntraditie kent, is het gebied altijd in beweging en bezig met nieuwe, spannende ontwikkelingen. “Wijnliefhebbers zouden nalatig zijn als ze de kwaliteitssprong in de Veneto niet opmerken”, aldus Eric Guido. Binnen het gebied merkt Eric een aantal trends op.
Amarone
Amarone is hét paradepaardje van het Valpolicella-gebied. Toch is de trend van volle en zware amarone’s aan het verschuiven naar een stijl met minder alcohol en restsuiker. Eric: “Er komen jongere generaties op de markt die verlangen naar wijnen met minder alcohol en een frisser karakter. […] De categorie Amarone is daardoor voortdurend in beweging, maar de toekomst lijkt veelbelovend.”
Valpolicella Superiore
Wijnmakers in het gebied blijven hun Valpolicella Superiore verbeteren. Eric ziet dat er steeds meer single vineyard Superiore’s worden geproduceerd wat leidt tot een hogere kwaliteit. Bovendien is het gebruik van appassimento voor Valpolicella Superiore uit de mode aan het raken. Anno 2023 laten producenten het terroir spreken en richten ze zich op een meer pure expressie van de druif.

Framing tannins punctuate the red beautifully as the single-vineyard La Bandina finishes spicy with an air of lavender that lingers.”

“The 2018 Amarone della Valpolicella Selezione opens with a dusty mix of black currants and lavender offset by clove and mocha hints. This shows the lift and finesse of the vintage while imparting undeniable elegance as depths of ripe red fruits are offset by a bitter tinge of dark chocolate. The 2018 finishes structured with fine-grained tannins, licorice and inner violet florals.”

“The 2017 Amarone della Valpolicella Campo dei Gigli is intense, like cracking open an ashen stone to find a bevy of dried black cherries, cinnamon sticks, incence and dried herbs. This is deeply textural with a balanced inner sweetness elevated by vibrant acidity as depths of tart red fruit balance and slowly saturates the palate in primary concentration. The 2017 finishes structured and dramatically long, begging for further cellaring, as a bitter tinge of currants and clove fade. Maybe splitting hairs, but I didn’t believe that Tenuta Sant’Antonio could outdo their 2016 Campo dei Gili, but over time the 2017 may be up to the task.”
